Has your mayonnaise gone bad? Of course, it can no longer be consumed. But don’t throw it away, because you can recycle it in the most unexpected ways! You may not know it, but you can reuse it to care for your houseplants and promote their growth. If you are a fan of gardening, you probably already know that to keep your plants healthy, it is important to clean their leaves to remove the dust that accumulates on their surface. However, the most experienced gardeners reveal that expired mayonnaise is very effective in accomplishing this task. A simple and very economical tip!
Expired mayonnaise, a friend of plants
If a houseplant is left uncleaned for too long, dust will not only deteriorate its appearance, but also prevent it from absorbing sunlight and carbon dioxide, compromising the photosynthesis process. However, by mixing expired mayonnaise with a little water you will get an excellent solution for cleaning the leaves, giving them more shine and even fertilizing the plant itself.
Simply dip a clean cotton cloth into the mixture and begin wiping the top of the foliage. This tip works best with houseplants with broad, smooth leaves, like sansevierias or alocasias.

The big advantage is that mayonnaise will not only revive your plants, it will also help you remove sticky residue that builds up on plants like sap. This process will further improve their health and prevent the development of diseases. And this, thanks to its content of vinegar, vegetable oil and egg yolks present in mayonnaise. However, when cleaning the leaves, do not forget to remove any residue of this mixture that could remain stuck. They are easily removed with a microfiber cloth and a little warm water.
It is important to know that this method only works on indoor plants and is not recommended for outdoor plants, as they are exposed to the sun and can be irritated by the presence of the mayonnaise.
Other tips for caring for your plants
Old towels
Every time you go on vacation, you often worry about watering the plants. An old towel will help you solve this problem: just soak it completely in water. Then take a saucer and pour water into it too. Place the soaked towel on it and place the saucer on top. This way, the plant roots will absorb the moisture from the towel and stay hydrated. How to choose the right size saucer? Place it upside down on the top of the pot and you can determine if it is adequate or too small. The important thing is that it can contain enough water to adequately moisten all the potting soil.
Sugar

Want to pick some flowers from the garden to decorate your home? To keep them fresh and healthy for longer, simply add a spoonful of sugar to the water in the vase and place the flowers there. This tip will help prevent them from wilting too quickly.
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Who would have thought it, but the toothbrush will be very useful for cleaning pots and plant leaves. At the same time, the use of toothpaste helps prevent the invasion of pests in the garden. It will act as a repellent against all small creatures. As a bonus, during your gardening session, having toothpaste on hand is an excellent idea to relieve and soothe the skin after a possible bee sting.
Spices

Finally, there are many cooking spices that prove to be very useful in the garden. For example, cinnamon is very popular for keeping rabbits, ants or squirrels away from your plants. Likewise, thanks to its antiseptic properties, turmeric will act as a perfect insecticide to keep ants away. The same goes for black pepper which also protects your plants from insects thanks to its antibacterial properties. Simply sprinkle a little on plants or mix ground black pepper in hot water, fill a spray bottle and use it on the soil.
