Growing Cyclamen: Endless Beauty for Your Home
Cyclamen, with their vibrant colors and delicate blooms, are truly enchanting plants, especially during the winter months. As autumn draws to a close and the holiday season approaches, stores and markets are filled with these charming flowers in shades of red, white, pink, and more. With proper care, the hardiest varieties of cyclamen can be grown year after year, providing endless beauty to admire or share with others.
Originating from the Mediterranean region, there are approximately twenty different species of cyclamen. These flowers thrive in mild temperatures, making them ideal for indoor cultivation. The cyclamen commonly found in markets fall into two main types: the hardy cyclamen, which can withstand cold weather and is often grown from seeds or bulbs, and the Persian cyclamen, known for its larger, more delicate flowers and typically found in florist shops.
Propagation from Seeds:
To propagate cyclamen from seeds, start by soaking the seeds in water for 24 hours. For outdoor planting, spring is the best time, when daytime temperatures reach around 10-12 degrees Celsius. Plant the soaked seeds in a seed bed or small pots, covering them with about ten centimeters of soil. Keep the soil slightly moist until you see shoots emerging. Once the shoots appear, water regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Seed propagation is a slow process, especially for Persian cyclamen, often taking over a year to develop fully.
Propagation from Tuber Division:
Cyclamen plants grow from tubers, resembling potatoes in appearance. Carefully remove the tuber from the soil, being mindful not to damage the roots. Using a sharp and sterilized knife, divide the tuber into two halves. Each half should be planted about 5 cm deep in the soil, allowing them to establish before the onset of winter. It’s advisable to mulch the surface to protect the tubers during the colder months. As with seed propagation, tuber division results in fully grown cyclamen plants in the following spring. Many professionals prefer the slower but reliable method of seed propagation.
