An exotic plant from the tropical regions of South East Asia, the orchid grows high up in the branches and absorbs a significant amount of humidity. Unlike plants whose main habitat is the soil, the orchid requires special watering which must perfectly meet its needs.

What are the watering rules to follow to obtain beautiful orchid flowers?

Watering is a crucial step in plant care, especially for orchids, because it requires in-depth knowledge of the frequency and methods of watering as well as the nutrients essential for its proper development. Here are the rules to follow for  successful flowering of your orchids.

  • Mastering the technique of watering orchids

The most effective technique for watering orchids is to  immerse the pot in a container of water for around fifteen minutes , long enough for the roots to absorb the water without the heart being affected. Once this time has passed, let the pot drain before putting it back in its place. Unlike other plants, orchids cannot tolerate being watered from above or staying in stagnant water for too long. Since it appreciates humid environments, it is possible to spray  non-calcareous water on its leaves,  especially during the hot season. A layer of clay balls and water can be placed under the pot to preserve this humid atmosphere.

  • Use suitable water for watering orchids

The orchid particularly appreciates rainwater. Softer, it is perfect for this tropical plant. However, it is advisable to collect and store this watering water inside your home at room temperature. Temperature changes can be harmful to its development.  Another alternative to rainwater: add a few drops of lemon juice to tap water.  This method helps remove limescale from the water.

  • Adopt the correct frequency of watering your orchids

The frequency of watering the orchid depends on two important criteria. First, the temperature of the room in which the plant is located but also the stage of its flowering. In addition, the composition of the substrate in which the orchid is planted must also be taken into consideration because it can dry more quickly depending on its volume in relation to the roots of the plant. As a general rule,  watering every week, or even every 10 days, will be sufficient during the flowering period  in an interior with a temperature between 17 and 24°C. At the end of this period, it is recommended to water every 15 days or 3 weeks.

  • Add Specific Fertilizers While Watering Orchids

To grow, it is not necessarily necessary to feed the plant with fertilizers, especially commercial ones.  Instead, favor nitrogen for the growth of its foliage and potassium for faster growth of the stems.  In order to provide these nutrients to your plant, mix the fertilizer at the time of watering, respecting the doses indicated. This technique is strongly recommended when the buds appear.

Some Mistakes to Avoid While Watering Orchids

Orchids are very sensitive plants. You must therefore take great care while remaining vigilant on a daily basis. Certain errors can be fatal and compromise their development or even kill them. Here are some examples.

  • Not checking orchid substrate before watering

As you will have understood, excessive watering is not recommended when caring for your houseplant. Before taking out your watering can,  check that the substrate is completely dry on the surface, between two waterings.  You can see this by sticking your finger into the soil about 2 cm deep. Furthermore, the roots should be gray and dull.

  • Watering orchids in full sun

Although this plant appreciates light, it cannot be exposed to the sun for too long.  It is therefore preferable to water it in the morning and keep it away from the sun’s rays which can burn it, particularly in summer.  It is recommended to mist orchids approximately 3 times a week, or even daily if necessary to avoid the effects of heat.

For radiant orchids, there’s nothing like proper watering. These few tips will help extend their lifespan while guaranteeing healthy and lasting growth.

Finally, during cold periods, consider placing your orchid in front of a window (interior side) in direct contact with the sun.
