Do you live in a dark home or want to green up a dimly lit corner? Which indoor plants can thrive with little light and minimal maintenance? Here are 4 species perfect for your home.
Can a Plant Live Without Light?

There are robust plants that require little light and adapt perfectly to poorly lit interiors. However, no plant can survive without any light. If kept in total darkness, they will wither over time.
4 Indoor Plants for Poorly Lit Rooms
Zamioculcas (ZZ Plant)

Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly known as the ZZ plant, is graphic, modern, and aesthetic, making it a favorite in our interiors. It’s very easy to maintain and suitable for novices. This plant thrives in low light and direct sunlight can burn its foliage. It requires ordinary potting soil for green plants, provided it’s well-drained.
- Watering: ZZ is drought-tolerant and only needs watering when the soil is completely dry, about every two weeks. Water thoroughly until it drains through the holes, then let it drain well before placing it back on the saucer.
Caution: The ZZ plant is toxic to cats and dogs.
Sansevieria (Snake Plant)

Sansevieria, also known as snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue, is a succulent with decorative foliage. It doesn’t require significant light, making it ideal for those without a green thumb. Too much direct light can damage its leaves, while too much shade can stunt growth or alter its color.
- Watering: Water only when the soil is completely dry. In winter, this might be once a month. In spring and summer, water every two weeks. Check the soil and leaves regularly.
Warning: Sansevieria is also toxic to pets.
Calathea (Peacock Plant)

Calathea has green and yellow leaves that are particularly aesthetic. Although a bit difficult to grow, it can thrive in specific conditions. Place it away from direct light and water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy. It prefers temperatures between 20°C and 29°C and at least 50% humidity.
- Soil: Use a peaty, light, well-draining mix.
- Humidity: Spray its leaves with water daily or use a humidifier nearby.
Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen)

Aglaonema, or Chinese Evergreen, loves humidity but fears the sun, making it perfect for a bathroom without light. It has decorative foliage and comes in various colors from dark green to pink and silver. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight.
- Soil: Use well-drained, slightly acidic potting soil.
- Watering: Keep the soil moist without soaking it. Reduce watering in winter but don’t let it dry out completely.
Warning: Aglaonema is toxic to cats and dogs.
