Lemon is a fruit with countless virtues. Rich in vitamin C, it’s the ultimate anti-fatigue citrus that protects your body from various microbes and viruses. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-infectious properties, lemon strengthens our immune defenses. It’s also detoxifying, aids digestion, and can even boost your mood. Plus, lemon is a fantastic cleaner and deodorizer for the home. With all these benefits, wouldn’t it be great to have your own lemon tree at home?

Why do you have to put a lemon seed in a glass of water?

Germinating lemon seeds is simpler than you might think. Here’s a straightforward method using just a little water!

Want to enjoy the benefits of lemon without constant purchases? Growing your own lemon tree at home is easier than it sounds! Follow this step-by-step technique to germinate lemon seeds effortlessly.

Step 1: Prepare the Lemon Seed

  1. Start with a good quality lemon (preferably organic).
  2. Cut the lemon in half and extract one seed.
  3. Remove any pulp and white pith, then rinse the seed thoroughly with warm water. Dry it completely.

Step 2: Soak the Seed

  1. Fill a glass with non-carbonated water.
  2. Drop the seed into the glass and let it soak for one hour.

Step 3: Wrap the Seed

  1. Moisten a piece of paper towel and lay it flat.
  2. Remove the seed from the water and place it on the wet paper towel.
  3. Fold the towel over the seed several times to create a small packet.
  4. Place this packet in a food storage bag (like a Ziploc), leaving it slightly unsealed to allow air in.
  5. Store it in a dark, warm place (like a cupboard). Check periodically; if the paper towel dries out, moisten it slightly.

After about three weeks, check the seed. You should see that it has germinated, with a root approximately 3 cm long. Amazing, right?

Tip: For better chances of success, use 4 or 5 seeds instead of just one.

It’s Time to Plant the Seed!

  1. Choose a small pot (about 8 cm in diameter and 13 cm high).
  2. Fill it with very light potting soil and plant the seed in the center at a depth of 3 cm, with the root facing down.
  3. Water the seed gently to moisten the soil.

Step 4: Create a Humid Environment

  1. Cut off the top of a water bottle and use it to cover the seed.
  2. Place the pot by a window, ensuring the soil stays moist until leaves appear.

Covering the seed with the bottle top creates a humid environment—essential for healthy growth. This homemade greenhouse also protects the seed from external threats, including pests.

Watching Your Lemon Tree Grow

Soon, you’ll have a lemon seedling with real leaves! As it grows, allow it to develop slowly. When it reaches about 12 inches (30 cm), it will need more space.

Transplanting: Move it to a larger pot or directly into your garden, where it can thrive. Remember, a lemon tree can grow up to 6 meters high!

Care for your tree by providing adequate fertilizer and watering to prevent nutritional deficiencies. With proper maintenance, you can look forward to a great harvest!
