Discover the optimal timing and care tips for successful eggplant cultivation.

Eggplants, known for their finicky nature, require diligent care to ensure a fruitful harvest. Here’s a comprehensive guide to planting eggplant seeds and nurturing them to maturity:

Selection of Seeds:

To ensure a good yield, purchase seeds from reputable suppliers. Avoid using seeds from hybrid varieties for home seed collection, as they may not produce reliable crops. Look for seeds labeled with “F1” for hybrid varieties.

Seed Preparation:

Enhance germination by soaking the seeds in 45-degree water for a few minutes. Follow by soaking them in a 1% manganese solution for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water. Prior to planting, treat the seeds with a growth stimulator for 10 hours. Harden the seeds by placing them on a damp paper towel for 5 days in a room during the day and in a refrigerator at night until sprouted.

Sowing Soil:

Prepare a neutral pH, light, and fertile soil mix by combining humus, sod soil, and sand in a ratio of 2:1:1. Sterilize the soil in an oven, then freeze with dill. For every 10 liters of soil, add 1 glass of wood ash, 30 grams of granulated superphosphate, and 15 grams of urea. Fill seedling containers with this mixture.

Timing for Planting Eggplants:

Choose planting times based on the variety’s ripening period:

  • Early varieties: 85-90 days
  • Medium-ripe varieties: 90-120 days
  • Late varieties: 120-150 days

In southern regions, sow seeds from late February to early March, with seedlings transplanted into the ground by late May. In northern and central regions, plant hybrids and early to mid-ripening varieties in mid-March and transplant seedlings by early June.

Growing and Care:

Minimize stress for sensitive eggplants by planting two seeds per small container, which can be easily transferred to the soil. Keep containers in a warm, dark place until seedlings emerge. Adjust temperatures to 20-28 degrees Celsius before emergence, then 8-10 degrees Celsius at night and 14-16 degrees Celsius during the day for the first 7 days after emergence. Subsequently, maintain night temperatures at 17-18 degrees Celsius and daytime temperatures at 20-22 degrees Celsius. Water plants under the roots every three days with room temperature water. Add antifungal fungicides to irrigation water twice a month and ensure proper ventilation.

Feeding:

First feeding should occur when seedlings develop three leaves. Dissolve 30 grams of superphosphate and 7 grams of urea in 10 liters of water, then spray seedlings with clean water. Administer a second feeding with complex mineral fertilizers 7 days before transplanting into the soil. Begin hardening seedlings two weeks before planting when they reach 20 cm in height, have up to 9 dark green leaves, 3 buds, a strong root system, and a straight stem.

Follow these guidelines diligently for successful eggplant seedling growth and a productive harvest!
