Creating a trap to prevent ants from climbing your plants is a simple yet effective solution.

Here’s how you can set it up using common household items:

Materials needed:

  1. A plastic bottle (1-1.5 liters)
  2. Olive oil or fat
  3. Foam rubber or EVA rubber
  4. Scotch tape
  5. Scissors
  6. Stapler

Construction of the trap:

  1. Wrap the trunk of the plant with foam rubber or EVA rubber. If the trunk is thick and cannot be wrapped completely, secure the piece of rubber with adhesive tape.
  2. Cut thick strips from the plastic bottle, making sure they are almost double the width of the rubber. Place these strips around the rubber at the same height. The wider plastic will create a chamber at the bottom. Tape the strips and staple them to the bottom of the joint to secure them in place.
  3. Coat the plastic with oil. You can do this by soaking a piece of rubber in the fat and spreading it over the plastic.

How it works:

The trap works by creating obstacles for the ants as they try to climb the plant. When ants encounter the foam rubber, they are unable to continue climbing and may try to climb through the plastic. However, since the plastic is coated with oil, the ants get stuck, forcing them to retreat.

Additional tips to prevent ants from climbing:

  1. Use scents that ants dislike, such as cinnamon or mint essences, at the base of the plant.
  2. Plant ant-repellent species like garlic, calendula, or chrysanthemum around the plant to act as a barrier.
  3. Eliminate the scent trail of ants by wiping it with bleach or ammonia. This disrupts the ants’ communication and prevents them from finding the plant.
  4. Place food mixed with poison, such as sugar with boron salt or sugar with corn flour, near the plant base to kill ants when they consume it.

By implementing these methods, you can effectively deter ants from climbing your plants and protect them from damage.
