Originally from Central America, zucchini is an annual plant with deciduous foliage, belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. Zucchini flowers from May to October. Its yellow flowers are edible.  This vegetable plant can be planted in the ground, or sown in pots. To flourish, zucchini needs  sunny exposure  and a temperate climate. As for the soil, it must be drained and rich in humus. For growing in the ground, add compost to the bottom of the hole and plant the young plants  , keeping a space of one meter  between each plant. Then pack the soil and water. You can also sow zucchini in pots to  protect the young plants from slugs.  After germination, only transplant vigorous plants into the ground.

Zucchini is a plant that is easy to care for. Remove weeds regularly, and water the plants generously when it is hot,  without wetting the leaves,  to avoid humidity which causes powdery mildew. You can harvest zucchini  two months after sowing,  preferably before the seeds appear.

What other vegetables can you plant in April?

In addition to tomatoes and zucchini, you can also add peas and artichokes to your vegetable garden.

The pea is an annual plant with deciduous foliage. This vegetable, rich in mineral salts and vitamins,  has digestive properties.  It appreciates a temperate climate and a sunny exposure. However, protect it from the sun  when it is very hot.  As for the soil, it must be drained, fresh, and neutral. Peas cannot tolerate limescale.

Between March and May, you can sow wrinkled peas. Sow them in rows, making sure  to keep a spacing between rows  of 40cm or 60cm, depending on the variety. Then, cover your seedlings with soil, tamp them down and water lightly  with non-calcareous water.  Note that peas do not like drought. Water them regularly, especially during periods of high heat. Also consider installing mulch on the ground. This way, you maintain its freshness  and prevent the appearance of weeds.  To facilitate harvesting, it is advisable to install stakes. They are also recommended even for dwarf varieties.

The pea can be attacked by several parasites, such as sitona, black or green aphids, pea weevil or even the pea moth. This vegetable plant can also be affected by fungal diseases such as downy mildew or powdery mildew.

The artichoke is a flower vegetable with semi-evergreen foliage. Easy to grow, you can plant it in your vegetable garden  to benefit from its medicinal properties. This vegetable plant appreciates a mild climate and sunny exposure. The soil must be fresh, drained and rich in humus. To successfully plant the artichoke, it is advisable  to plant the carnations. The latter are buds which grow at the foot of the mother plant, and which are detached in order to multiply the artichoke. It is possible to propagate artichokes by seed, but this method takes a lot of time and may not give good results. That said, choose the carnations  that have roots  and plant them keeping a spacing of about one meter. The artichoke likes rich soil. Do not hesitate  to fertilize the soil before planting , using manure or compost. This flower vegetable also appreciates water. Water the plants generously once a week in summer,  avoiding wetting the foliage. Then install mulch to keep the soil fresh and prevent the soil from drying out between two waterings. Note, however, that excess humidity can cause  your vegetable plant to rot.

In addition to tomatoes, don’t forget to also sow zucchini during the month of April, in order to obtain an abundant and organic harvest in June.
