Growing your own fruits and vegetables at home has become increasingly popular, and it’s entirely possible to cultivate them even in pots on your balcony. Whether you’re starting with seedlings, fruits, or vegetables, each type has its own care requirements. Today, we’ll guide you through the process of growing strawberries in a pot, even using those purchased from a supermarket. Follow these steps, and by summer, you could be enjoying delicious, home-grown strawberries.

1 – What You’ll Need:

  • Strawberries (from the supermarket or cultivated ones)
  • Flower pot
  • Seedbed substrate
  • Knife

2 – Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. Prepare the Strawberries:
  • If your strawberries are from the supermarket, they have already been stored in cold conditions, so no additional refrigeration is needed.
  • For cultivated strawberries, clean them carefully, avoiding seed removal, and refrigerate them for at least 15 days. Choose the ripest strawberries for this process.
  1. Select and Prepare the Strawberries:
  • Pick strawberries with the most seeds. The seeds are tiny, brownish spots on the surface of the fruit.
  • Remove any unripe parts, including stems and leaves.
  • Using a knife, gently peel and slice each strawberry, similar to peeling.
  1. Set Up the Pot:
  • Choose a pot with a drainage hole. Fill it with seedbed substrate, leaving about 10 cm of space from the top.
  • Arrange the strawberry slices on the substrate, seeds facing up, covering the pot’s diameter.
  • Lightly cover the slices with more substrate, just enough to cover them.
  1. Water and Cover:
  • Water the substrate thoroughly, but avoid flooding.
  • Cover the pot with plastic wrap to create a greenhouse effect. Make small holes or cuts in the wrap to allow for air circulation.
  • Place the pot in a sunny spot where it’s easily accessible.
  1. Monitor and Care:
  • Check daily for the next 15 days to ensure the soil remains moist.
  • After 15 days, you’ll start to see the first shoots. Continue caring for the pot until small leaves appear.
  1. Transplant Seedlings:
  • Once you see small leaves, transplant each seedling into a permanent pot.
  • Remove the plastic wrap, and allow the plant to grow naturally. With proper care, you’ll soon see your strawberries developing on your balcony.

Essential Care for Strawberry Plants:

  • Hydration: Keep the soil hydrated, especially during dry periods.
  • Nutrients: Ensure the soil remains rich in nutrients for optimal fruit production.
  • Sunlight: Provide ample sunlight for healthy growth.
  • Timing: Plant strawberries ideally in March or April.
  • Moisture Management: Avoid letting moisture accumulate under the pot or container.
