Ants pose a significant challenge for gardeners, as they can cause substantial damage to crops, fruit trees, and bushes. Their colonies, known as anthills, can expand rapidly and reach depths of up to one and a half meters.
Methods of Fighting Ants
There are two primary approaches to controlling ants: preventing them from reaching trees and bushes and eliminating anthills.
Method One: Creating a Barrier
To prevent ants from climbing onto trees, create a water barrier. Take an old tire and cut it lengthwise. Bury it under the tree with the edges protruding slightly above the ground. Fill the trench created by the tire with water. Additionally, wrap the tree trunk with aluminum foil, ensuring a sharp edge that ants cannot traverse. Alternatively, you can purchase a sticky adhesive belt designed for trees from a specialized store.
Method Two: Destroying Anthills
To eliminate an anthill effectively, prepare a solution by mixing two cups of oil, shampoo, and vinegar with one bucket of water. Thoroughly blend the ingredients and pour the solution into the center of the anthill, ensuring it penetrates well. Seal the hole with a bag and leave it undisturbed for 2-3 days. The ants will carry the poisoned bait to their queen and larvae, leading to the colony’s demise.
Dealing with Indoor Red Ants
For red ants commonly found indoors, locate their entry points and spray these areas with dichlorvos (dichlophos). Additionally, specialized chalk and gel products are available for effectively removing these indoor pests.
By employing these straightforward yet effective methods, gardeners can effectively manage ant infestations in their gardens and protect their precious plants from potential harm. Taking proactive measures against ants ensures a healthier garden environment and better yields.
