To propagate a Sansevieria or “mother-in-law’s tongue” from a single leaf, follow these simple steps:

Leaf Cuttings in Soil:

  1. Prepare the Leaf: Use cleaned and disinfected pruning shears to cut a leaf from the mother plant. Place the leaf on a board.
  2. Cut into Sections: Cut the leaf into small sections, about 8 cm long. Make a small incision at the base of each section to mark the end that was closest to the pot before cutting.
  3. Allow to Dry: Let the cuttings dry for one to three days to prevent rotting. Optionally, apply rooting hormone to encourage root growth.
  4. Prepare the Pot: Choose a terracotta pot with drainage holes. Place clay balls at the bottom for drainage. Mix potting soil with sand to create a well-draining substrate.
  5. Plant the Cuttings: Plant the cuttings in the center of the pot, ensuring the marked end is inserted into the soil. Lightly water the substrate.
  6. Create a Mini Greenhouse: Cut a plastic bottle in half and place the top part over the pot, keeping the cap closed. Remove the cap for at least 10 minutes a day to prevent condensation. Mist the substrate lightly. After about a month, remove the bottle and transplant the young shoots into new pots.

Leaf Cuttings in Water:

  1. Prepare the Leaf: Cut a leaf from the Sansevieria and divide it into sections.
  2. Place in Water: Immerse the cuttings in a container of water, ensuring they are oriented the same way as they were before cutting. Avoid direct sunlight.
  3. Change Water: Change the water when it becomes cloudy.
  4. Transplant: Roots will appear in two to four weeks. Once there are more roots, transplant the cuttings into pots.

Care for Sansevieria:

  • Watering: Water when the soil is completely dry, and avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering frequency in winter.
  • Temperature and Humidity: Keep away from drafts and heat sources. Sansevieria appreciates heat and humidity.
  • Soil and Fertilizer: Use sandy soil or cactus mix. Fertilize during the growing season with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
  • Exposure: Provide bright light without direct sunlight.
  • Diseases and Pests: Sansevieria is resistant but can be attacked by pests like mealybugs. Clean foliage with rubbing alcohol or soapy water if infested.

With these steps, you can easily propagate Sansevieria from a single leaf and enjoy this low-maintenance and air-purifying plant in your home.
