This low-maintenance plant is often grown indoors in pots or greenhouses. During its flowering period, it requires weekly watering, while in winter, it only needs the soil to be kept slightly moist.
In this article, we’ll show you four easy methods to propagate your cactus orchid from cuttings (sections of stem or leaf). You can buy cuttings from a nursery or simply use a leaf from your own plant. The best time to take a cutting is just after flowering. Remember to cut the stem carefully below the base of the leaf to avoid damaging it.
Once you’ve taken the cuttings, let them dry for 5-7 days before propagating them using one of these methods:
1. River Sand Method
For this method, you’ll need:
- A plastic container (or bottle)
- River sand (rinsed and moistened)
- A sieve for washing the sand
Steps:
- Make a few small drainage holes at the base of the plastic container.

- Fill the pot halfway with the prepared soil mixture.
- Make a notch in the soil and insert the leaf cutting so it’s half-buried.
- Ensure the leaf is oriented upwards, with the growth direction clearly visible.
