Enhance Onion Quality with These Three Effective Fertilizers
To achieve a plentiful and high-quality onion harvest, proper feeding is crucial. Applying the right fertilizers at specific times during the growing season will significantly improve your crop. Here’s a detailed guide on how to increase your onion yield with three key fertilizer applications.
June Fertilizer Schedule
June is the optimal time for feeding onions, as the plant is most capable of absorbing essential nutrients during this month. Follow these steps for three stages of fertilization to ensure a bountiful harvest of juicy bulbs.
First Feeding: June 1 to 10
During this period, focus on nitrogen-based fertilizers. Calcium nitrate is an excellent choice. To prepare the solution, dissolve 12 grams of calcium nitrate in 10 liters of water. Apply this solution directly to the soil around the roots. Nitrogen helps stimulate the growth of the green tops of the onions and subsequently supports bulb development.
Second Feeding: June 10 to 20
For the second round of feeding, use potassium monophosphate. Dissolve 15 grams of potassium monophosphate in 10 liters of water and water the plants with this mixture. After three days, follow up with a treatment using chicken manure. To prepare, mix 1 liter of chicken manure with 9 liters of water and let it sit for two days. Strain the mixture and dilute 500 milliliters of the infusion in 10 liters of water before applying it to the onions.
Third Feeding: June 20 to 30
The final feeding should be applied about a week after the previous one. Choose the fertilizer based on the condition of your onion bulbs and their foliage.
- If the onion tops look weak, use a nitrogen-containing fertilizer. Mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia in 5 liters of water and spray the onion plants in the evening.
- If the onion bulbs are growing well, opt for a wood ash extract. Combine 1 liter of sifted wood ash with 9 liters of boiling water and let it steep for two days. Strain the mixture, then dilute 500 milliliters of the infusion with 9 liters of water before applying it to your onions.
By following these fertilization steps, you will boost the growth and quality of your onion crop, leading to a more abundant and flavorful harvest.
