Flowers are not only valued for their decorative appeal but also for their delightful fragrance. While cut flowers brighten up indoor spaces, their lifespan is often short. Fortunately, you can take steps to extend their freshness. Here are the secrets to keeping your cut flowers vibrant for as long as possible.

How to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh?
To maximize the longevity of your cut flowers, proper care is essential. Here’s how to do it:
1. Trimming the Stems
Start by cutting the stems by 2 cm at an angle using a pair of sharp, disinfected scissors—preferably under water. This diagonal cut enhances water absorption. Remember that only the stems should be submerged in the water. Additionally, remove any lower leaves to prevent them from rotting, which can harm the rest of the flowers.
As days pass, regularly remove any dry leaves and faded flowers. Leaving these in the vase can release harmful substances into the water, accelerating the wilting process of the fresh flowers.

2. Taking Care of the Water
After trimming, place your flowers in a clean vase filled with fresh water at room temperature. Ensure the water covers only half of the stems. To nourish your flowers, dissolve a teaspoon of sugar or a sugar cube in the water.
To keep your flowers fresh, change the water every 48 hours. When doing so, thoroughly clean the vase to eliminate any decaying residue. A great way to clean the vase is to use a microfiber sponge soaked in a solution of baking soda and lemon. After cleaning, add lukewarm water with half an aspirin tablet dissolved in it. Aspirin can help prevent bacteria growth in the water, thus extending the life of your bouquet without providing nutrients like a fertilizer would.
Tip: To enhance water quality, consider adding a 5-cent copper coin to the vase. The copper acts as a fungicide, preventing bacterial growth.

3. Keeping the Flower Vase in the Right Place
Positioning your vase correctly is crucial. Keep it in a cool place, away from heat sources, while ensuring it’s in a bright area without direct sunlight. Additionally, keep the vase away from the fruit basket; fruit emits ethylene gas, which can hasten the wilting process of your flowers.
By following these tips, you can preserve the freshness of your cut flowers and enjoy their beauty for a longer period!
