Growing an avocado at home can be a rewarding experience, and here’s how you can do it:
What you’ll need:
- An avocado pit
- Moistened kitchen towel
- Plastic bag with an airtight seal
- Glass container
- Recycled expanded polystyrene
- Water
Step by step:
- Clean the avocado pit: Make sure the avocado pit is thoroughly cleaned to remove any remaining avocado flesh, which could cause rotting.
- Wrap the pit: Wrap the avocado pit in the moistened kitchen towel, ensuring it’s completely covered. This will create a moist environment conducive to germination.
- Place in a plastic bag: Seal the wrapped avocado pit in a plastic bag to retain moisture.
- Provide warmth: Place the bag containing the avocado pit in a warm, dark place to encourage germination. Leave it for 2-3 weeks, ensuring to moisten the towel whenever it dries out.
- Monitor germination: Once you see the avocado pit has sprouted roots and shoots, it’s time to remove it from the bag.
- Prepare a glass container: Cut the recycled expanded polystyrene to fit the diameter of your chosen glass container. Cut out a center circle smaller than the avocado pit to hold it in place.
- Fill the glass with water: Fill the glass container with water.
- Insert the avocado pit: Place the polystyrene in the glass container and insert the avocado pit with its roots into the center hole. Position it in a bright location, such as near a window.
- Change the water: Regularly change the water in the glass container, approximately once a week.
- Transplanting: Once the avocado plant has grown sufficiently, transplant it into a larger pot with suitable soil, or directly into the garden in spring.
Tips for growing in pots:
- Pot size: Start with a 5-liter pot and gradually increase to a 30-liter pot as the plant grows. Repotting will promote root growth and overall plant health.
- Soil: Use acidic soil with a pH between 5 and 7. A suitable mixture includes equal parts peat, worm castings, and coconut fiber, with some perlite for drainage.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the summer months. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, and check soil moisture regularly.
- Pruning: After the plant reaches about a year old and reaches a height of 60cm, consider pruning to stimulate horizontal growth and encourage a bushier plant.
