You’ve tried many times to keep a houseplant alive and despite your best efforts, you always get the same result. The leaves of your plants are withered or your plant has unfortunately dried up completely and you don’t understand. It’s obvious, you don’t have a green thumb. Why not opt ​​for indoor plants that require very little maintenance.

We have prepared for you a list of ten plants that do not need a lot of water and are almost self-sufficient.

What are low water houseplants?

These plants are easy to care for and allow you to go about your various activities.

1. The Sago palm or Japanese sago

Japanese cycad, Japanese sago or even sago palm: this is how this small shrub native to the Land of the Rising Sun is nicknamed. This indoor plant  will bring an exotic touch that will dress up any room in your house in an original way. Japanese Sago will be in its element in a bright location with a temperature between 20 and 22°C. This beautiful plant also appreciates humidity and for good flowering, it is advisable to water it with mineral water at least every two weeks. In winter, you can let it dry out an inch or two before watering it again. Be sure to keep your pets away from your plant as it is toxic. It produces a neurotoxic amino acid which makes it dangerous.

2. Mother-in-law’s tongue

Choose mother-in-law’s tongue for its original flowering. With its resistant foliage, this houseplant will delight the laziest among you. It does not have a stem, which makes it much easier to maintain. To grow this beautiful plant, it is not necessary to water it regularly. Moderate watering from May to September is recommended but from October the plant goes into hibernation and you can stop watering it permanently from December. After this vegetative rest, resume watering at the beginning of March until new root growth occurs.

3. Orchids

Orchids are very resilient tropical flowers. This variety of plants has more than 25,000 species which form the richest family in the plant world. These different colored flowers should be placed in a ventilated place with plenty of light without direct sunlight. Orchids do not need to be overwatered. It is recommended to immerse the pot of these indoor flowers in a tray of water for around fifteen minutes. Then drain it before putting it back in place. For optimal flowering of their butterfly-shaped flowers, avoid placing them near radiators and other sources of heat.

4. Elephant’s foot

Also called Beaucarnea, this small indoor tree does not require much maintenance. It likes to be placed in a bright place and in a fairly narrow pot. He doesn’t like having too much space. It requires very little water because its stems store water to act as a reservoir in case of drought. To cultivate elephant’s foot, simply water it once or twice a month in case of extreme heat and in winter, there is no need to water it. This houseplant prefers to lack water rather than receive too much water.

5. Hairy Chlorophytum or Spider Plant

The hairy chlorophytum or spider plant can go without water for a week. These indoor green plants will be in their environment in a bright place but without direct exposure to the sun. It will be ideally placed in a hanging pot to highlight its hanging ribbon-shaped foliage. Very resistant, it tolerates drought better than excess water. Its nutrient-rich roots are capable of storing water and allow watering to be spaced out.

6. Zamioculcas or ZZ plant

Zamioculcas is a wonderful houseplant because it does not require much attention. Ideal as a decorative object, the ZZ plant does not like receiving a very large quantity of water. It will grow easily in a bright location near a window with full sun exposure. Good news for those who tend to forget to water their pretty plants because zamioculcas doesn’t like to be watered too much. It will be satisfied with always moist potting soil with non-calcareous water.

7. Kalanchoe daigremontiana

Nicknamed the mother of thousands, it has foliage decorated with small green and brown plants. This plant native to Madagascar is very easy to grow. It should be placed in a bright place, away from cold drafts. This succulent plant does not require much watering. Give it water so that its soil is always dry between two waterings.

8. Aglaonema

This indoor plant attracts all eyes with its original foliage in mottled red and green colors. It must be grown in a bright place but not in direct exposure to the sun. To maintain the beauty of its leaves, it will feel best in a place with a temperature above 14°C. Its soil should never dry out completely so it is advisable to water it regularly. But you can let it breathe for a week or two while the soil dries.

9. The Pothos

10. The succulent
