For a detox juice, an herbal tea or to season your pumpkin soup, ginger is the extra ingredient that will make all the difference. It is therefore no coincidence that fans of this rhizome want to have it all year round. To turn this desire into reality, here is the tip that will allow you to have endless ginger, from a simple flower pot.

Appearing in France around the 13th century, ginger is above all appreciated for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, its ability to lower blood sugar and strengthen natural defenses. As it can also serve as a base for the preparation of a dessert, the seasoning of a dish or a soup by bringing a touch of freshness and pep.

How about ginger in a flower pot?

Rather than going around the stores looking for ginger to flavor your meat or poultry marinades, your stews or your herbal teas, why not think about growing it comfortably at home from a simple flower pot without any hassle .

This tropical plant being native to South-East Asia, it is necessary, if we wish to cultivate it in France, to offer it favorable conditions.

Ginger being a plant that particularly appreciates heat, it is important to ensure that the temperature does not drop below 20 degrees.

Get a rather large flower pot. Ginger grows mainly in width, so there is no need to opt for a deep pot and make sure that the distance between each of the roots exceeds twenty centimeters. Rather than planting seeds, you will need a ginger rhizome. It should be firm and rather light green.

How to do ?

  1. Using a clean knife, cut the rhizome into several pieces of approximately 3 centimeters.
  2. Ginger must be dry and clean before planting.
  3. If, on the other hand, it is damp, let it sit for 48 hours to prevent it from rotting.
  4. Once this time has passed, you can plant your pieces of ginger in shallow but fertile soil.
  5. Then cover everything with a layer of substrate of approximately 5 centimeters and do not hesitate to water abundantly.

Planting ginger at home may seem simple, but the most important thing is knowing how to care for it. This plant particularly appreciates heat, it will be necessary to ensure that it is exposed to the sun daily. Place your pot on a windowsill or not far from a radiator to allow the plant to absorb heat.

Like most roots and plants, ginger needs regular watering. It is imperative that the substrate remains moist. But humidifying does not mean drowning. If you don’t want your ginger to rot too quickly, water it sparingly.

If you are a fan of eco-responsible actions and compost your organic waste, vermicomposting can be useful when growing ginger. A ginger planted in early spring can benefit from the benefits of vermicomposting around the end of June. In summer, your pot will be at home on your windowsill or in your garden. Direct sunlight should, however, be avoided as it could burn your ginger. You can start taking advantage of the latter and its vitamins from the month of October by incorporating it into a pineapple juice or a thyme-lemon infusion to benefit from its antioxidant, medicinal and stimulating properties which promote digestion and fight against bloating.

To flavor your dishes and make culinary preparations, it is important to enhance your recipes with fresh aromatic plants and other varieties such as ginger. With this technique and a touch of ingenuity, you can grow ginger all year round.
