Ants can pose a significant challenge for gardeners, causing damage to crops, fruit trees, and bushes. Their anthills grow rapidly, sometimes reaching depths of up to one and a half meters. Here are practical methods to effectively manage ants in your garden.

Methods of Fighting Ants

There are two primary approaches to controlling ants: preventing them from reaching trees and bushes and eliminating their anthills.

Method One: Prevention

  1. Creating a Water Barrier: Prevent ants from climbing trees by creating a water barrier. Take an old tire and cut it lengthwise. Bury it under the tree with the edges protruding slightly above the ground. Fill the trench with water. This barrier discourages ants from crossing to reach the tree.
  2. Using Foil: Wrap the tree trunk with foil, creating a sharp edge that ants cannot easily crawl across. Alternatively, you can use adhesive belts designed for trees, available at specialized stores.

Method Two: Destruction of Anthills

  1. Preparing a Solution: Mix two cups of oil, shampoo, and vinegar in a bucket of water to create a potent solution to destroy anthills.
  2. Application: Locate the anthill and make a hole in its center. Pour the prepared solution into the anthill and seal the hole with a bag or cover. Leave it for 2-3 days. The ants will carry the poisoned bait to their queen and larvae, ultimately eliminating the colony.

For red ants commonly found indoors:

  • Identify the Source: Locate where the ants are entering or accumulating indoors.
  • Treatment: Use dichlorvos (dichlophos) to spray areas of ant activity. Alternatively, specialized chalk and gel products are available for effectively removing indoor ant infestations.

By employing these methods, you can effectively manage and reduce ant populations in your garden and home, safeguarding your plants and enjoying a pest-free environment.
