Planting from seeds is a common practice, but did you know there are other ways to grow plants? Through stem and leaf cuttings, root transplants, and spores, you can create clones of your favorite plants right at home, no garden required.
Here are five plants you can reproduce without seeds using simple methods:
1. Fern

Ferns reproduce through spores found on their leaves. Gently shake a frond over a piece of paper to collect these tiny spores. Sprinkle them onto moist soil, cover with plastic wrap to retain moisture, and wait patiently. It may take a few months for sprouts to emerge. Once they grow, transplant them into pots for further growth.
2. Potato

Sprouted potatoes, often forgotten in the bottom of drawers, can be used to grow new plants. These sprouts are actually small stems. Plant egg-sized potatoes directly into soil, or cut larger potatoes into pieces with sprouts, ensuring each piece has a sprout. Allow cut pieces to dry before planting. With care, these sprouts will develop into new potato plants.
3. Begonia

Begonias can be grown from cuttings taken from mature stems or leaves. Cuttings should be around four inches long. Make a hole in the soil and insert the cutting, pressing gently to secure it. Keep the soil moist until roots develop. Once rooted, these cuttings will grow into new begonia plants.
4. Strawberry

Strawberry plants produce stolons, which are horizontal extensions of the main stem that develop new roots, creating new plants. Carefully extract a runner with roots attached and plant it in soil rich in organic matter. Water regularly and watch as it establishes itself to become a new strawberry plant.
5. Basil

Next time you buy a bunch of basil for cooking, select stems without many leaves. Cut just below a node, where a leaf meets the stem. Place the cuttings in a container with water, ensuring the nodes are submerged. Change the water every two days to keep it fresh. Once roots develop, transplant the basil cuttings into pots for continued growth.
With these simple methods, you can propagate new plants from existing ones, expanding your indoor garden with ease. Enjoy the process of nurturing new growth and watching your plant collection flourish!
