In our gardens or parks, fertilizers are essential for supplying key nutrients like potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen to the soil. These nutrients are vital for healthy plant growth and optimal fruit production.

While chemical fertilizers are designed to provide these nutrients effectively, their excessive or improper use can harm the soil and plants. On the other hand, organic fertilizers are a more eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative. They consist of natural materials, making them a great choice for sustainable gardening.

Here, I’ll show you how to create two organic fertilizers that can help your plants produce abundant fruit.

1. Banana Peel-Based Fertilizer

If your plants are showing signs of potassium deficiency, such as yellowing leaves or leaf curling, a banana peel-based fertilizer can help restore their health. This homemade fertilizer is rich in potassium, which is essential for vibrant leaves and healthy fruit development.

Ingredients:

  • 5 banana peels
  • 1.5 liters of water
  • Medium pot
  • Bottle

Procedure:

  1. Prepare the Peels: Cut the banana peels into small pieces.
  2. Cook the Peels: Pour the water into the pot and add the banana peels. Heat the mixture over medium heat for about 15 minutes, or until the water turns brown.
  3. Cool and Store: Remove the pot from heat and let the liquid cool. Transfer the cooled mixture into a bottle.

Application:

  • Dilution: When using the fertilizer, mix one part of the banana peel infusion with five parts water.
  • Frequency: Apply once a week. During the blooming period, you can use the fertilizer undiluted every 15 days.
  • Alternative Use: You can also bury pieces of the banana peel directly in the soil of your pots. This will provide magnesium, potassium, and other nutrients.

Note: The risk of over-fertilizing is minimal with this liquid fertilizer as it degrades slowly. However, its shelf life is relatively short.

2. Eggshell-Based Fertilizer

Eggshells are an excellent source of magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. This homemade fertilizer will help enrich the soil and support healthy plant growth.

Ingredients:

  • 5 or 6 eggshells
  • 2 liters of water
  • Blender
  • Spoon
  • Medium pot
  • Bottle

Procedure:

  1. Prepare the Eggshells: Place the eggshells in the blender and blend until they turn into a fine powder. Stir occasionally to break up larger pieces if necessary. If you don’t have a blender, you can use a mortar and pestle to grind the shells.
  2. Infuse the Shells: Pour the water into the pot and add the powdered eggshells. Bring the mixture to a boil, then let it simmer for about five minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the mixture to cool.
  3. Store and Use: Pour the cooled infusion into a bottle.

Application:

  • Usage: Add a small amount of the eggshell infusion to your watering can when you water your plants. The eggshells will enrich the soil with magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus.
  • Proportions: Be cautious with the quantity of eggshells used to avoid overloading the soil with magnesium.

By using these homemade fertilizers, you can provide your plants with essential nutrients while maintaining a natural and eco-friendly gardening practice.
